I live in Chandigarh and work for an IT company in Noida. Since I follow a hybrid work model, I only travel to the office for two days every alternate week. The distance from Chandigarh to Noida is approximately 280 km, and a one-way trip costs me ₹1500–₹1800 (including fuel, tolls, and miscellaneous expenses). A round trip can cost me around ₹3500–₹4000.
I prefer driving my own car rather than using public transport. However, while traveling alone, I always wondered if I could have someone to share the journey with and make the ride more enjoyable. That’s when a friend introduced me to BlaBla Car, a carpooling app.
Initially, I had no idea how the app worked. So, I did some research, read about its benefits, and found it perfectly aligned with what I needed. I installed the app, registered, and published my first ride from Chandigarh to Noida at 6:00 AM.
My First Experience with BlaBla Car
Within two hours, I received two ride requests—one from Mohali and another from Zirakpur. Both were IT professionals. One worked with Microsoft technologies, and the other was traveling for an interview at Ericsson.
We started our journey at 6 AM and reached Noida by 10 AM. The experience was amazing—I had great conversations, made two new friends, and saved money on my travel expenses.
Why Are Taxi Drivers Opposing BlaBla Car?
Lately, I have seen several videos where taxi drivers are harassing people who use BlaBla Car. Their main reason? Insecurity!
Let’s break it down:
- A BlaBla Car ride from Chandigarh to Amritsar costs around ₹500, whereas a taxi charges ₹2700–₹3000 for the same trip.
- Naturally, people would prefer the cheaper and more convenient option.
Taxi unions see BlaBla Car as a threat to their business, but instead of adapting to change, they resort to intimidation and harassment. Unfortunately, Punjab Police is also supporting them by stopping BlaBla Car users and issuing challans without any legal basis.
Is Carpooling Illegal in India?
The answer is NO! BlaBla Car is 100% legal under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
🔹 Section 66(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 states that a private vehicle cannot be used as a commercial taxi without a proper permit.
🔹 However, carpooling is NOT commercial—it is a cost-sharing model where the driver only takes a minimal contribution from passengers to cover fuel expenses.
🔹 This means as long as the car owner is not making a profit, carpooling remains legal.
Even legal expert Sunil Mallan has confirmed that using BlaBla Car is completely legal, and if someone harasses or stops you, you can take legal action against them.
The Need for Social Acceptance
Change is inevitable, and society must adapt to new solutions that make life easier. BlaBla Car is solving a genuine problem—it provides a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and convenient travel option. Instead of resisting this change, taxi drivers should innovate and evolve.
