In today’s fast-paced world, entertainment is essential. We’re all busy with work and responsibilities, and entertainment gives us a much-needed break. But while entertainment is crucial for relaxation, its influence on society, especially on the younger generation, is worth considering.

My Background and Experience

I’m a Punjabi, and like many others, I grew up dreaming of a luxurious lifestyle—expensive cars, a big house, and the latest gadgets. But as I matured, I began to question the point of these materialistic desires. Why do we aim to buy things we don’t need or can’t afford? Often, it’s just to impress others or satisfy our ego.

This trend of materialism, particularly among young people, wasn’t as common before 2010. However, today’s youth are highly influenced by the entertainment industry, especially Punjabi pop music, which often promotes a flashy lifestyle that can lead to unrealistic and sometimes harmful goals.

The Influence of Punjabi Pop Music on Youth

If you listen to popular Punjabi music today, you’ll notice a common pattern. Most songs revolve around three main themes:

1. Women in revealing outfits
2. Luxury car displays and a lifestyle of excess
3. Promoting gun culture

Out of fifty songs, you’ll rarely find one with meaningful lyrics or gentle music. As a big fan of music myself, I enjoy listening to it in my free time, but finding good songs nowadays is challenging. What I often hear instead are songs that lack positive messages or values.

Few Punjabi singers, like Ranjit Bawa, Tarsem Jassar, Satinder Sartaaj, and Ammy Virk, are creating music with depth and meaning. But most other artists are focused on producing vulgar songs, showcasing scantily-clad women in music videos, and promoting a superficial lifestyle—all to make money.

The Real Impact on Young People

It’s surprising and concerning to see how young people engage with this content. They create reels and videos on social media, mimicking these songs and unintentionally encouraging the music industry to make even more of such content. Young people want to match the lifestyle they see in music videos, often buying expensive items—sometimes even taking loans to do so—just to impress others.

Girls, too, are influenced by this culture, adopting fashion choices to look “modern.” While there’s nothing wrong with expressing oneself, sometimes this can lead to pressure to fit in, especially among those who live away from home and may feel like they need to portray a particular image.

Are Singers Really to Blame?

Some Punjabi singers have spoken about this issue. In an interview, Maninder Buttar, a popular singer, shared that artists feel pressured to create this type of music because that’s what people listen to. He mentioned that if audiences wanted meaningful songs, artists would be happy to create them, but current demand pushes them to make flashy, sometimes meaningless content.

Buttar gave an example: items like the Mahindra Thar and Range Rover Defender became popular just because they were featured in music videos. This influence is massive. If artists and actors took a stand together, they could create positive change and inspire society.

The Real Solution: Balance and Awareness

The problem isn’t with music itself. Music is a beautiful form of expression and can be a source of joy and relaxation. But it’s important for people, especially young ones, to listen with awareness. Instead of blindly following the lifestyle shown in music videos, we should enjoy the music while keeping a balanced perspective.

Not everything shiny is good for us, and not every trend is worth following. By being aware of how entertainment influences us, we can enjoy it in a healthy way without letting it shape our values or choices in life.

The entertainment industry has a significant impact on society. While Punjabi pop music has brought fun and energy, it has also introduced some challenges. As fans and listeners, we have the power to influence the industry by demanding meaningful content.
