Old Age Home Experience: A Life-Changing Visit
In today’s fast-paced world, most people are so caught up in their careers and personal lives that they forget their roots, culture, and family values. Balancing life between parents, work, and personal commitments has become a big challenge for many young people. Sadly, we often fail to realize the sacrifices our parents made for us until something shakes us to the core.
Hi, my name is Kushal, and I am from Amritsar, Punjab. Today, I want to share an experience that completely changed how I see my parents and their struggles. It made me realize the value of family and how important it is to cherish and care for our loved ones.

A Reluctant Visit
When I was in school, one of my closest friends, Inderpreet, was deeply involved in social work. He was always talking about helping others, and honestly, I never shared his enthusiasm. I wasn’t interested in volunteering or social activities; I only hung out with him because we were childhood friends.
One day, Inderpreet planned a visit to an old age home in Amritsar near GT Road, called Guru Ramdas Old Age Home. At first, I wasn’t excited at all. In fact, I was indifferent and even thought it was a waste of time. But since all our friends were going, I decided to tag along.
First Impressions
On the day of the visit, eight of us gathered near Golden Gate and made our way to the old age home. As we entered, the management team welcomed us warmly. They greeted us with flowers and blessings, which instantly made us feel special.
We were guided to an activity hall, where a series of interactive sessions had been planned. After completing the formalities, we began engaging with the elderly residents. We introduced ourselves, shared stories, and played games with them. Despite their struggles, many of them laughed and participated with genuine joy.
The Heartbreaking Stories
As the activities ended, we were encouraged to interact with the residents individually. I sat down with three different people, and their stories moved me to tears.
First Lady: A Mother Abandoned
The first person I spoke to was a 70-year-old lady. She struggled to walk because her hip bone was broken, and she couldn’t even sit comfortably. I gently asked her why she was staying at the old age home instead of with her family.
She paused for a moment and then broke down in tears. She told me that she had two sons—one settled in America and the other in another state in India. After her husband passed away, her younger son started abusing her physically, even breaking her leg.
Her elder son, instead of taking her in, decided to send ₹5,000 monthly to the old age home to cover her expenses. He justified his decision by saying he was too busy with his job. As she recounted her story, I could see the pain and betrayal in her eyes. It was heartbreaking to imagine a mother enduring such cruelty from her own children.
Second Lady: A Brave Government Officer
Next, I met a retired government officer who received a pension of ₹80,000 per month. She seemed strong and confident, but her story revealed a lot of pain.
After her husband passed away, her son and daughter-in-law started mistreating her. Her son took all her pension money every month, spending it on alcohol while his wife used it for household expenses. Things escalated when one day, her daughter-in-law slapped her over a minor argument.
Her son, instead of defending her, stood silent. That night, she decided to leave the house. While everyone was asleep, she packed her belongings and left. A kind auto driver dropped her at the old age home, where she has been living ever since.
Despite everything, she has found peace among the other residents and spends her pension on helping those in need at the old age home. Her resilience inspired me, but it also made me sad that she had to leave her own family to find respect and dignity.
Third Encounter: A Couple’s Betrayal
Finally, I met an elderly couple. The wife greeted me with a hopeful smile, saying her son would soon come to take her and her husband to America. Confused by her optimism, I turned to her husband, who called me aside to share the real story.

Their son, who lived in America, had asked them to sell their house and belongings, promising to take them abroad. Trusting their son, they sold their property for ₹40 lakhs and gave him the money.
When their son arrived in India, he took them to the railway station, claiming they would first travel to Delhi and then fly to America. On the train, he said he was sitting in another coach and would meet them at the destination.
The couple fell asleep, only to wake up and realize the train wasn’t heading to Delhi but to Bihar. When they tried calling their son, his phone was switched off. Slowly, it dawned on them that they had been abandoned.
Heartbroken and penniless, they returned to Amritsar and came to the old age home, where they now live. The wife still believes her son will come back for her, but the husband has accepted the bitter truth.
A Lesson Learned
Hearing these stories left me emotionally shattered. I couldn’t believe how cruel and selfish some people could be toward their own parents.
When I returned home that evening, I hugged my parents tightly and promised myself that I would never let them feel unloved or unwanted. I realized how much they had sacrificed for me and how important it was to value them while they were still with me.
A Message to All
This visit taught me that our parents are our greatest blessings. They spend their entire lives raising us, often putting their own dreams and needs aside. The least we can do is ensure they feel loved, respected, and cared for in their old age.
If you are fortunate enough to have your parents in your life, take time to show them how much they mean to you. Listen to their stories, share your life with them, and never make them feel like a burden.
Life is short, and the love of a parent is irreplaceable. Don’t wait for a heartbreaking experience to remind you of their value. Let’s honor and cherish our parents every single day.
