Today, I want to share my experience and thoughts on a sensitive topic: the role of sex work in society. What I See in Mohali

While driving home in Mohali, I often notice several women standing near traffic lights in certain areas, wearing heavy makeup and short, attractive dresses. They stand there to attract people for paid sex work, and I frequently see cars stopping, people talking with these women, negotiating, and then driving away with them. After a while, the men drop them back at the same spot.

It’s clear that a system or “mafia” controls these interactions. There seems to be a network where women are placed at certain spots and taken to clients who pay for their services. While such things used to be hidden, they are now happening openly in broad daylight. This is particularly alarming as even young boys, barely 14 or 15 years old, could be exposed to these activities.

Social Media and Youth Behaviour

Social media has also changed how younger generations view relationships and intimacy. Today, we see girls as young as 13 or 14 wearing makeup and posting dance videos online. Many of these dances are suggestive or “vulgar” in nature. It worries me because these kids are exposed to things that, in the past, people would only understand after turning 20 or older.

The internet has made adult content so accessible that even a child as young as 10 or 12 can learn about it. This makes me wonder: Are we giving children too much too soon? Are they losing the innocence that’s natural at their age? Will these changes benefit or harm them in the long run?

Sex Work in History vs. Today’s World

Historically, sex work existed to provide an option for those who couldn’t find a companion, helping them avoid turning to harmful actions like assault. Instead of harming someone, they would pay for services to fulfill their needs. While it served a role in society, today, it has turned into a commercialized, widespread practice, with increasing numbers of people participating. I even heard about students in universities offering these services for money. When I was younger, we barely knew about these things. One of my friends once told me that he had paid ₹5000 to a university girl for a single encounter. Hearing that was a shock, as such things weren’t common back then.

It feels like society’s patience is decreasing. People want everything instantly, and they often make risky decisions to get what they want quickly.

The Sad Reality of Society Today

Another thing that shocks me is the behavior of some modern youth. For example, girls openly smoke, drink, and think it’s “cool” to do so. It’s not about judging these actions but rather wondering if society is moving in the right direction. In India, girls have traditionally been viewed as symbols of respect, often compared to goddesses. I wonder how these behaviors will shape the next generation.

Scams and Risks of Casual Encounters

In Mohali, I also heard of a shocking scam that happened to two boys. These boys were out for a casual hangout in a popular market area when they met two young women dressed attractively and looking wealthy. The girls asked the boys to “have fun together,” and the boys agreed. They bought drinks and went to a hotel room, each couple going to a separate room. Once there, the girls started seducing the boys, and when the boys were vulnerable, the girls called the police, claiming attempted assault. The police, seemingly in on the scam, threatened the boys with serious charges. In fear, the boys paid ₹2 lakh to settle the matter.

A Story of a Family Scandal

A friend of mine shared another shocking incident. His sister, Gurpreet, got married into a well-to-do family with modern values. During the family functions, Gurpreet’s brother, Jaikaran, became attracted to her sister-in-law, Pavleen, a confident and outgoing girl. They exchanged numbers and soon started spending time together secretly. One night, they met on the terrace while everyone was asleep, and their physical relationship began. This affair continued for a while until their families eventually found out. Hearing this story left me speechless.

Conclusion: My Thoughts on Social Change

Society is always changing, and I believe that change can be positive. But sometimes, the changes we see are hard to digest. Is this kind of behavior truly progress? I feel we should question the direction we’re heading.
