“Life is unfair,” they say, especially when the stars aren’t in your favor. It feels as though every problem is destined for you alone.
My name is Sarita, and I’m from Delhi. While I was in college, pursuing my MBA, my father took out a loan to support my education. But, as life would have it, things took a difficult turn. Just before my last semester, my father passed away. Losing him was a heartbreaking experience for my mother and me.
Six months after his death, we were beginning to come out of the trauma, ready to start looking ahead and move forward with our lives. One day, as I was returning from the market, I saw a man arguing with my mother outside our home. He left before I could reach them, and I immediately asked my mother who he was and why he was being so rude.

Sarita: “He’s the person your father borrowed money from for your education.”
Ankita: “Okay… What did he say?”
Sarita: “He’s demanding the overdue payments. We haven’t paid the last six months of EMI, and he’s threatening to take our house if we don’t pay by next month.”
Ankita: “How dare he! Don’t worry, Mom. I’ve completed my studies, and I’m already looking for job opportunities. I’ll find a job soon, and we’ll pay him back.”
Sarita: “You’re my brave girl. I know you’ll make us proud.”
Ankita searched hard for a job but, despite her efforts, she didn’t find the opportunity she was hoping for. Returning home one day, feeling defeated, she shared her frustration with her mother.
Ankita: “I haven’t found a job, Mom.”
Sarita: “Ankita, maybe we should sell the house, pay off the loan, and move to a rented place with the rest of the money.”
Ankita: “No way, Mom! I have a business idea. I’ll tell you about it tomorrow.”
The next day, Ankita brought a small food cart home.
Sarita: “Ankita, what’s this?”
Ankita: “Let me explain. I’m going to start a street food business, selling items like fried potato tikkis, pani puri, and more.”
Sarita (in shock): “No, Ankita! We spent so much money on your education, and now you want to sell street food? What will people think? Who will marry you? Have you even thought about that?”
Sarita was both shocked and disappointed. She continued to resist the idea, but Ankita remained calm, eventually managing to convince her mother.
Ankita: “I’ve tried hard to find a job, but it hasn’t worked out. Trust me, Mom. This business will succeed. Just give me one year. If it doesn’t work out, I promise I’ll close it and find a job.”
Sarita: “Are you sure? You’ll close it in a year if it doesn’t succeed?”
Ankita: “Yes, Mom.”
Sarita: “Alright… Where will you open this cart? Are you planning to go around the streets?”
Ankita: “No, I spoke to one of Dad’s friends who owns a shop in the market. He’s letting me set up the cart outside his shop, and I told him I’d pay him back later since I don’t have the money right now.”

With her mother’s hesitant support, Ankita set up her cart outside the shop. The first day, she sold very little, and a lot of the raw materials went to waste. She didn’t lose hope, though. On the second day, sales were even worse; she didn’t sell a single tikki.
Sarita: “Ankita, I told you this wouldn’t work.”
Ankita: “Don’t worry, Mom. I know how to make this work. Just trust me.”
Determined, Ankita made a new sign for her cart: “MBA Tikki Wali” and offered a promotion—”Buy one, get one free.”
Sarita (concerned): “Are you out of your mind? How will you save anything if you give away food for free?”
Ankita: “Trust me, it’ll work.”
The next day, the promotion and catchy name caught people’s attention. Soon, a food blogger featured her, and her stall went viral. People came from far and wide, willing to wait in long lines just to taste her street food. Ankita’s business was thriving, and she was finally happy.

But one day, the same man who had loaned the money showed up, demanding payment.
Uncle: “You’re making money, so when will you pay me back?”
Ankita: “I’m working hard to pay you back, Uncle. Please give me a little more time.”
Uncle: “No! I want my money by tomorrow morning, or I’ll take your cart!”
At that moment, Karan, a passerby, noticed the scene and approached Ankita, asking what was happening. Ankita explained the situation to him.
Karan: “Uncle, she said she’ll repay you. Just have a little patience.”
Uncle: “Who are you? Stay out of this!”
Karan: “How much does she owe?”
Uncle: “Five lakh rupees.”
Karan: “Don’t worry. You’ll get your money by tomorrow morning.”
Ankita: “But I don’t have the money…”
Karan: “Don’t worry. I’ll cover the amount and invest in your business too.”

Ankita agreed, and with Karan’s help, her business grew rapidly. A year later, they had multiple carts around the city and had opened two new restaurants. Sarita noticed Karan’s kindness and honesty and one day asked if he would consider marrying Ankita. Karan happily agreed, and the two were married, running multiple franchises across India.
The moral: Life may be unfair, and sometimes the stars aren’t in your favor. But believe in yourself—hard work and perseverance will always pay off.
